While teaching English and African American Studies, Nnaemeka Ekwelum, a native Bostonian, witnessed how literature helped his students better understand the significance of history. This experience, coupled with his other experiences as an educator, inspired him to enroll in the Arts in Education Ed.M. program at HGSE. Although he himself labors over writing, often in very tortuous ways, Nnaemeka identifies less as a poet and more as someone who aspires to live poetically. This aspiration empowers him to explore and express himself across various art forms (most recently through craft art). Post-HGSE, Nnaemeka plans to advance his study of Black youth development via a joint doctoral degree in Africana Studies and Education.
