Juan Luis Macias was born and raised in Reno Nevada to Mexican immigrants. He is the youngest of three children and a first generation high school graduate and college graduate. He is currently an MD candidate in his first year at Harvard Medical School. Juan Luis received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) where he studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Growing up with little opportunity was difficult for Juan Luis, but the want for continual growth caused Juan Luis to develop an adamant character. The thought of going to medical school in high school was just as elusive as going to the Olympics. However, with the help of the Nevada Air National Guard, Juan Luis was able to serve in the armed forces while receiving financial assistance towards his bachelor’s degree drawing him nearer to his dream of becoming a doctor. Juan Luis is grateful to find himself at HMS. Experiencing a lack of health care insurance throughout his life and observing a faulty health care delivery system has inspired Juan Luis to not only practice medicine in the future but to be involved with public health education and policy that affects the health of all individuals.
